Dameon Abercrombie, 24. Birmingham, Alabama Passed Away Days After House Fire Rescue
A Birmingham man has died days after being rescued from a house fire, as injuries from severe smoke inhalation proved too much for him to overcome.
Dameon Abercrombie, 24, was pulled from a burning home earlier in the week and later died on Saturday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. His death marks the heartbreaking conclusion of a rescue effort that initially offered hope for survival.
The fire broke out Thursday afternoon around 2:58 p.m. at a residence in the 6500 block of 2nd Avenue South. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews responded quickly, entering the smoke-filled home in search of anyone trapped inside.
Inside the house, firefighters found Abercrombie and immediately removed him from the scene, providing emergency care before transporting him to UAB Hospital. Medical staff treated him for serious smoke inhalation injuries, and there was initial hope that he might recover.
However, his condition declined over the following two days. Despite continued medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 4:42 p.m. on Saturday.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service is working to determine where and how it started, while police are also reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this time, officials have not confirmed whether anyone else was inside the home when the fire began.
The investigation remains ongoing, with further details expected as more information becomes available.
What remains is the loss of a young man whose life ended after being pulled from danger, leaving behind unanswered questions and deep sorrow.
